So. 2010...here we are. A fresh start. One of the items on my Before Emily Dies List is, to learn to play the piano. So last year, after 36 years, I finally got an electric keyboard for Christmas. And a stand. But for one year, no piano lessons. Why? I dunno...I just let life get in the way I suppose. Stupid, but true. I won't sit here and lie.Anyway, this year, I got Will Burrows' DVD "Learn and Master the Piano" from Santa. I started the first lesson yesterday afternoon. Turns out, my keyboard is too short...only 61 keys. Damn. But I decided, after one lesson, this is not the time to invest in an 88-key keyboard piano. Or invest/haul an upright into the house. We'll see how it goes first. I'm pretty sure there are people in this world (great piano players even), who have learned in worse conditions. Let's not jump the gun.
But...so far, I love it. And I really like the format of these DVD's. I can go at my own pace, and after the workshop, I put on a play-along CD and can put my new lesson to test. And with the 3 chords I just learned....well, it doesn't exactly sound like Hot Cross Buns, like when I played (aka attempted) clarinet in the 3rd grade!! They have a band that you play with, so the music is very fleshed out. You get the feel of the new material, but it seems like you know what you are doing, even if it's premature. Love that. Hey, I'll pretend. Can't hurt, right? It's advised to not continue the sessions until you master the previous material..makes sense to me. I will be taking advantage of that quite a bit, no doubt. And I like that Will Burrows won't know if I re-play session 1 four times. He will never get annoyed. Not that a piano teacher would ever get impatient, but what the heck do I know?
So anyway, here I go on this journey, my little battery-powered keyboard is ready and waiting. Can't wait for the second lesson later today! (And by that I mean, can't wait to replay session 1!) Hurray for "better late than never". And Happy New Year!
